Elastin

Collagen gives the skin its strength and structure, while elastin allows it to stretch and return to its original shape. Together, these proteins form the primary support of the dermis.

UV rays, smoking, pollution and free radicals are the primary causes of the degradation of fibres of elastin. They activate enzymes called elastases, which degrade these structures.

Applying elastin to the skin generally does not boost the natural production of elastin, since this protein has too high a molecular weight to cross the skin barrier. However, certain fragmented forms, such as elastin peptides or hydrolysed elastin, have been shown, in in vitro, studies to stimulate fibroblast activity, the cells responsible for its synthesis. These results, however, still need to be confirmed in vivo.

Dietary supplements containing elastin to date lack robust scientific evidence demonstrating their efficacy on the skin. Although some individuals report more supple and better-hydrated skin after a course of treatment, these effects remain subjective and are not confirmed by published clinical studies.
