Elastin

Elastin is a fibrous protein essential for the elasticity and resilience of the skin. Found in the dermis, it enables tissues to stretch and then return to their original shape, much like a biological spring. Its synthesis peaks during childhood before gradually diminishing with age, contributing to reduced skin suppleness and the formation of wrinkles.

FAQ about elastin

What is the difference between elastin and collagen?

Collagen gives the skin its strength and structure, while elastin allows it to stretch and return to its original shape. Together, these proteins form the primary support of the dermis.

Which factors contribute to the degradation of elastin?

UV rays, smoking, pollution and free radicals are the primary causes of the degradation of fibres of elastin. They activate enzymes called elastases, which degrade these structures.

Can applying elastin to the skin stimulate its natural elastin production?

Applying elastin to the skin generally does not boost the natural production of elastin, since this protein has too high a molecular weight to cross the skin barrier. However, certain fragmented forms, such as elastin peptides or hydrolysed elastin, have been shown, in in vitro, studies to stimulate fibroblast activity, the cells responsible for its synthesis. These results, however, still need to be confirmed in vivo.

Are elastin-based dietary supplements effective?

Dietary supplements containing elastin to date lack robust scientific evidence demonstrating their efficacy on the skin. Although some individuals report more supple and better-hydrated skin after a course of treatment, these effects remain subjective and are not confirmed by published clinical studies.

Can elastin used in cosmetics be vegan?

Yes, the elastin used in cosmetics can be vegan. Traditionally sourced from animals, it is now replaced by plant-derived alternatives or produced by fermentation of amino acids. These versions replicate the properties of natural elastin and provide similar benefits for the skin without resorting to animal products.
